How Do TCC Events & Meetups Work?
The Toronto Climbing Club helps facilitate indoor and outdoor climbing meetups and day trips, organized and run by volunteer admins & members.
We are not a professional guiding service—we are a community of climbers who believe everyone should experience indoor and outdoor climbing.

Indoor Meetups & Gym Tour
Meetups:
Indoor meetsups are arranged by members looking for climbing partners to boulder, top rope, and lead climb at gyms located across the GTA. All meetups are organized in the TCC WhatsApp group.
Gym Tour:
Each month, the Toronto Climbing Club hosts a casual meetup at a different climbing gym around the GTA — a great way to try new gyms, meet other climbers, and stay connected with the community. All are welcome, no matter your experience level!
Outdoor Meetups & Trips
Logistics:
Outdoor events are arranged weekly, and typically on weekends (either/both Saturday and Sunday)
Events are organized in the TCC Outdoor Meetup WhatsApp group.
Locations are decided and day / driver specific groups are made by approximately Thursday evening.
Arrival to locations are in the morning (between 8am-10am, weather and daylight hours depending) and departures are at sunset. This is not a hard rule. Drivers may arrive late and leave early, and others can stay later within park hours (9pm closure)
Expectations:
Climbing is inherently unsafe. In our endeavours to climb against gravity, we don’t forget that gravity will always win, hence the user of safety gear.
Volunteer leaders are experienced climbers.
Only lead climbers with valid indoor gym lead certifications are allowed to set routes.
Only climbers with indoor gym belay certifications are allowed to belay.
While it is exciting to climb outdoors, especially for your first time, climbers should be aware that outdoor climbing is inherently different and often much more difficult than indoor climbing. A common rule of thumb is to add 2 grades to outdoor climbing routes, for example: an outdoors 5.8 could feel like an indoor 5.10.
It is also crucial to be comfortable with your equipment. All outdoor climbing attendees are expected to have their own:
Climbing shoes
Modern harness
Climbing helmet
In addition, climbers are expected to be comfortable and familiar with:
Tying in (figure 8 and safety knots)
Grigri use
Belay best practices and communication
Basic rope management
And just some friendly etiquette reminders:
Keep your volume to a minimum, especially if there are other groups around; nothing is more challenging when a belayer and climber can't hear one another
Don't reserve climbs: if your climbers aren't ready, either clean it or let other groups have a go while you wait
Break into smaller groups if needed
Most importantly, don't litter and have fun!
Outdoor Trip Waiver
Starting in spring 2025, TCC will be requiring a waiver from all outdoor climbing participants The waiver lasts one (1) year. A copy of the waiver is below. While the language is strong, the most important part is:
”I understand that negligence includes failure on the part of the releasees to take reasonable steps to safeguard or protect me from or warn me of the risks, dangers and hazards of participating in TCC activities.”
For now, check out the waiver below.:
